Vol. 1.0: Café Society

On The New Bohemian Coffee Culture

Over second and third cups flow matters of high finance, high state, common gossip and low comedy. Coffee is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a fouler of sleep if you want it so. From roadside mugs to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat.

The smell of the roast, the hissing sound of a finely tuned espresso machine, the billowing steam from the milk foamer — this is café life!

And, it’s become a familiar scene, especially here in Helsinki, where coffee culture has taken hold throughout the city, in various novel new forms, transforming conventional old store fronts into hipster havens, mom’s clubs, dog owner conventions, and entrepreneur work stations. In this sense, the café is now a kind of extended living room, one that has become a fundamental part of the daily life of our beautiful Nordic city.

I can’t help but be reminded of the intense coffee cultures of the places I’ve traveled to for Nest Factory, where the café has often been a perfect landing spot, with its slick white tiled walls and industrial interiors. It is the perfect backdrop for our Berber mats, Ethiopian hand craft, Indian kaftans and abundance of color, which come together to create the perfect Scandi-Boho statement.

All this month, as I’ve been observing customers sitting, sipping coffee here at the KUUMA Café, I thought it would be interesting to pull together my take on café society through a curated selection of Nest Factory products. A barista “look” so to speak. Hip, Hipster, On-the-Go, Industrial with little soft touches, some color and always a dash of ethnic that comes with a story. After all, you need something to talk about over your hot cup of coffee.
