Kantha is one of the oldest textile traditions in the world
Kantha (pronounced kaan-tha) is a form of hand embroidery and quilting that originated in the Bengal region of South Asia, spanning parts of modern-day India and Bangladesh. The word itself roughly translates to "rags" in Sanskrit because the original Kantha pieces were made from recycled saris and dhotis layered together and stitched by hand.
Women would spend months, sometimes years, stitching old garments into new ones. Warm blankets, soft wraps, beautiful pieces passed from mother to daughter. Nothing was wasted. Everything was transformed.
What makes it different from regular quilting?
The signature of Kantha is the running stitch...a simple, repetitive stitch that creates rippled, wave-like patterns across the surface of the fabric. It sounds straightforward, but the effect is anything but. Thousands of individual stitches, placed by hand, give Kantha textiles their characteristic texture, softness, and movement.
No two Kantha pieces are the same. The patterns, the thread colours, the layers of fabric underneath, they're all unique to the hands that made them. That's not a marketing line. It's just how the craft works.
Why we love working with Kantha at Nest Factory
At Nest Factory, our Kantha pieces start with vintage and upcycled textiles, fabrics that already have a history. Our artisan partners, who we've worked alongside for years, take those materials and transform them into something new: Upcycled Kantha Coats, tote bags, home textiles.
It's the same spirit as the original craft. Don't waste what you have. Make it better.
Our Kantha Coats are some of our most loved pieces, genuinely one-of-a-kind, warm without being heavy, and softer every time you wear them. They're not fast fashion. They're the opposite.
How to care for your Kantha piece
Kantha is surprisingly durable, but it does appreciate a little care. Hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle in cold water. Lay flat to dry. Avoid wringing. Treat it well and it'll last for years, which honestly, is the whole point.
If you'd like to explore our Kantha collection, you can find it here. Each piece is different. Each one has a story.
